1 + 8 Ways to Stay Alive (2024) is an open form verbal score for 5 performers, their heartbeats, and their objects/instruments.
In the room, there are 5 stations (one for each performer) with 2 scores each. Every performer enters the space with an object, a set of objects, or an instrument related to the qualities of their pulse and chooses a station to sit and a score (one of two) to play. When prompted by the score, performers move to another station without taking anything with them except from their pulse. The score will unfold over 5 rounds, and each transition from one station to another should be initiated by a different station in each round. All players follow the performer initiating the transition and change seats accordingly. The process repeats, with all players exploring different stations, scores, and instruments/objects in subsequent rounds. It ends when all have played in all 5 stations. The ensemble can consider different seating arrangements in each round, allowing various sonic interactions and relationships to emerge and develop (e.g., circle, molecular, spiral, geometric, or random arrangement) or choose to maintain a specific arrangement throughout the score.
The score was created in the context of Composition lab of Experimental Music led by Alexis Porfiriadis and was performed by the WHI Ensemble at the Philippos Nakas Conservatory.
