In a sorrowful place, on the banks of a river, there is neither peace nor silence. A creature in this swamp hears nature sighing. A rock illuminated by the moon has carved letters that form the word "DESOLATION." A man stands on the rock. The creature hides in the lake and watches the man, who gazes upon the desolation alone from the rock. The creature of the lake grows angry and curses nature. Then everything stops and quiets. The rock now forms the word "SIOPI" ("SILENCE").
This is the most wondrous myth from the books of the magicians, as recounted by the woman who saw us sitting on a bench and asked us for a cigarette. We gave her one, she lit it, and left, dragging her cart and laughing.
This myth resembled a cosmological prophecy, a riddle that we had to decode. What did it mean? The first words that came from her mouth still echoed in our ears:
"The place I am telling you about is a sorrowful place. The waters of the river are sulfur-colored and sickly."
Her words, but even more so her silences, led us to "visit" poems and sounds about silence. Philosophical movements and religions, artists and explorers of a silence we can hardly comprehend. Many questions and a mystery about Silence arose in us. Does it exist after all? What is it? Where is it found? Does it exist on Earth? In space? Why is it more important to us than anything else?
Silence holds a majesty, a power, like the sea or an endless snowy landscape. And those who cannot admire this majesty are afraid of it. And perhaps that’s why many fear silence, someone said.
Someone spoke of the poetics of silence, another of its anarchy, another of its aesthetics, its architecture.
If silence could speak, if it could blow, if it could erupt, it would uproot all the trees in the world, someone else said.
But enough with words. It’s time to seek our own silences, our own noises, the light, the darkness, the poetry, the beauty, and the ugliness, and above all, to listen, inspired by a short story by Poe, to our needs, our dreams, nature, and the people around us, creating our own myths.
The rest is Silence.
The performance "Silence" is a scenic, auditory adaptation of the fictional story "Silence – A Fable" by E.A. Poe. Continuing in the cabaret style of the troupe, the work will be an experimental cabaret, and through sounds, songs, and movement, it will bring Poe's story to life.
